Day 20: Relaxin' on the beach

Day 20: Relaxin' on the beach

Previous Entry Share Next Entry
This was a wonderfully relaxing day for Mateo and me. We stayed up until two in the morning playing card games with a couple of British guys and a Canadian girl who were touring for some time. The guys are working there way around the world, and the girl has been touring Australia for five months. We had a great time and it was really nice to meet some other travelers doing the same type of thing as us.

We got up around noon and had breakfast at our bungalow restaurant. We have a running tab with them, so it is easy to eat there and the prices are comparable to the rest of the island, so we don’t mind so much.

After breakfast we went into the local town-like area (which is just a paved road with a few shops on it) to find a phone so I could call my dad. I always call my dad on Sundays to say hello, no matter where I am, and it is really easy from payphones in Thailand. All you have to do is dial 008 then the country code, area code, and phone number. It is about 5 bath (15 cent) a minute to the U.S., which isn’t bad at all.

After the call we changed into our swimming trunks and went out into the water. It was higher than it was yesterday, so we couldn’t go as far out, but we still had a lot of fun. Mateo showed me how to walk on my hands underwater doing a handstand. We played around a lot diving into waves and practicing different swimming techniques. We must have been out there for over an hour just playing around and relaxing.

Afterwards we went back to the hammocks and read some. I am now reading the book Mateo just finished, “Ransom for a God.” It isn’t the best of novels, but it takes place all in Thailand, so it is at least topical for our trip. Mateo is reading a new David Eggers book called “You Shall Know Our Velocity,” which looks really good. I had never heard of David Eggers before, but he seems like a really good author, and I might get some of his books when I return to Japan.

We read a little more, when to the restaurant to have lunch and then I went on a jog on the beach as the sun was setting. I don’t usually run at all, but it was really nice to jog along the beach and watch the sun set. I didn’t go too far, but it was some good enjoyable exercise.

When I got back I saw Mateo playing his Nintendo DS. He bought a GBA cartridge with something like 130+ NES games on it. A lot of games from my childhood were on there including my personal favorite game ever: Star Voyager. I spent some time playing it and explaining the esoteric commands of the game to Mateo. The rules of the game aren’t even clear from the book that came with the game as I recall, but it is really fun once you get the hang of it.

He also has many Super Mario Bros. games on the cartridge, so he spent about one hour beating the original Super Mario Bros. I was very impressed. I was never able to beat it when I was a kid, but I am sure I have seen in done before. Mateo was so good that he remembered all the secrets in the game and was able to finish it fairly quickly.

We plan to wake up early tomorrow and tour the island by bike like we thought about doing yesterday. Things are so nice here that just lounging around all day is great in-and-of-itself.

Until next time, take care.

Yours,
