Weather: Cloudy Plan: Akagi JHS

Today was busy. I send in my application for the 4th year elementary school only ALT position. I also send in my 1200 character Japanese essay. If the people at the prefectural board of education like my essay I will have an interview. If I pass that I will be placed somewhere in Shimane Prefecture working at elementary schools. If I fail, I will have to find a private ALT position and fast!

  • /me does the dance of essay passing for Trev
  • I decided to take your example of having a personal userpic.

    Good luck with your essay!
    • Woah! It's little kid Scott! That is an awesome picture.
      • As my dad said, I picked up my beer-drinking habits early. I've got another photo with me on my uncle's lap, taking the dregs from his bottle. I vaguely remember thinking, "If dad drinks this all the time, it must be good in some way!"
  • woah, you've alrady hammered out the essay? I've been sitting on it and re-writing it for the past week. I'm terrified I'm just going to get passed over because I have no idea about the correct style for writing a Japanese essay. I've got several english versions I've written to try and bridge the gap between making a smooth english essay and a japanese one, but all I end up with is better revisions of the english one and stupider looking ones in japanese.
    *sigh*
If I could just skip the essay and hit the interview, I know I could do better. Heck, I've been a key player in the local shift of english into elementary schools here after the merger and I get invited to the planning meetings and stuff with the other teachers and principals and all that. I can talk the talk, I can walk the walk, but I can't write a stupid essay that really says that.

at any rate, good luck to us both. Did you fill up the full 1200 characters?
    • I have a feeling we will both get in without a problem.

I have the opposite problem, though. I am much more fluent when I am writing than speaking. 2 1/2 years of writing a journal entry a day in Japanese has helped me out a lot. (I didn't start putting them online until last year, but I started my first day at JHS, still have them all, too)

I didn't write the essay in English at all. I have found that I am better at writing in Japanese first and then if need be translating it into English. That way I don't use any terms that I wouldn't know how to say in Japanese. I Went over it with a fine-tooth comb many times and got advice on how to write a good essay from the teachers at my JHS. In the end my essay is a little over 1300 characters, but there are some English words in there too. After the deadline has past I'll post mine up for you to read.
