It is really fun teaching at such a small school. The kids are very friendly, but sometimes I have seen the teachers act a bit mean. For example, one of the kids is a slow learner. They are usually taught in a separate class called the “nobi-nobi” classroom, but for some subjects they are together with the rest of the students. When I was looking on at one of these classes, the slow learner was having a hard time understanding an activity in class and the teacher said in front of the class, “They don’t get this at all, huh?” The kid broke into tears, but fortunately the other kids kindly consoled her. I thought that was mean of the teacher.

Monday was a national holiday called Respect for the Aged Day, so Sakugi Elementary School, which I was supposed to go to teach at, was closed. So my wife Signe, the other ALT in Iinan, Mike, and I went to Miyoshi to do some shopping. Mike is a fashionable guy, so we went looking for nice stuff to decorate his apartment with. We visited a few pawn shops and the sort and found some good stuff. Afterwards we all played the card game Magic: The Gathering. It was really fun.
